New York Couple Captures the Iconic Northwest

Karlee and Paul wanted wedding photography clearly depicting that “our wedding location is Seattle, Washington”. We considered the modern downtown library by Rem Koolhaas, and a fabulous rooftop view from Sodo, Pioneer Square. Ultimately “the classics” represented these two best. We began our pre-wedding urban excursion at Seattle’s Pike Place Market, then rode in a classic British Bentley to the Olympic Sculpture Park, and finally arriving at the adorable, lodge-like Edgewater Hotel. (No they didn’t fish from their room!)

We had so much fun (and accomplished so much for the families and wedding party) during this pre-wedding playful session that during the rest of the day we were able to capture the natural flow of events. I much prefer working this way. No one enjoys hurrying through photographs during the reception. Besides, the candid moments during the cocktail hour are often when the light is most beautiful. Karlee and Paul wanted images that illustrated their love for each other and family. Sometimes other flows work better, so plans are customized from couple to couple, event to event. Planning is Teamwork. Teamwork. Teamwork. Thanks to Karlee and Paul for the great experience, and for your creative exploration of the possibilities.

Venue: The Edgewater Hotel

Miko and Lance add a Splash to Colorful Novelty Hill Januik Winery Wedding

Novelty Hill Januik Winery was the perfect setting for Miko and Lance’s wedding. A mix of elegance, modernism, and color in both the venue and the menu. I would recommend this wedding location as one of my top picks for nearly anyone. The setting can be changed dramatically by chosen details. From casual to elegant, low key reception to ruckus dance party. It’s possible those who seek formal and/or classic will prefer the gorgeous Fairmont Olympic Hotel.

Otherwise, I love this dramatic location with it’s inside/outside flexibility, access to a large dressing suite with huge windows for natural light, enormous doorways, contemporary architecture (which my architect husband has me fully appreciating), geographic landscaping, colorful fixtures… Go see it yourself and enjoy a picnic on the grounds or take a bottle or a few cases of local wine home with you. Cheers.

If you are curious, here are some of Miko and Lance’s highly regarded vendors. True to their thoughtful natures, the quotes reflect thoughts they wanted to share.

Dancing in the Streets at the Westin Bellevue, or was that New Delhi?

Monica Khurana and Vikrant Duggal put on a 4th of July extravaganza. Not only was theirs an above average wedding, it soars above even my (formerly) favorite Indian weddings, many of which are lush and exotic.
No white or blue to be found, but red was present in a thousand folds. Gold folds too. Between the attire and the draping, this lush event was one of my favorites to date. “Honored to be a part” feels trite. I was blown away. Above all, Monica and Vikrant handled this multiple-ceremony celebration with elegance and grace (and stamina too).

Behind every great event is a great team. Naturally Monica’s wisdom lead her to Janel of Occasions LLC- a fabulous event planner. She took care of hundreds of details on the day-of. Even before that, Janel and Monica were often seen attached at the hip pre-planning this event. Janel makes herself available, from her core being. The fact that she cares so much comes shining through. I’ve raved about Janel again and again, and after each event we participate in I only have more to rave about. Monica and Vikrant chose to commend her during their reception thank yous. “Our friend” came affectionately from their lips describing the culmination of their journey together.

Everyone of the vendors were carefully chosen to fit this grand day. If you care to, see the list below their sneek-preview images.

Melissa & Richard married at Tillicum Village

Melissa Petersson and Richard Rinehart had a gorgeous ceremony at Blake Island’s Tillicum Village. This truly unique wedding embraced numerous cultures, most obviously Native American. From totem poles, to eagle feathers collected by Melissa and carried by the flowergirl, each moment presented something new to photograph.

The festivities began early morning with an hour long Argosy Cruise, and ended late night on another cruise rocked by the ceremonial beat of native drum, dance and song. What an honor and privledge to be apart of this cross-cultural, cross-generational and cross-the-water spectacular wedding.

Congratulations Melissa and Richard. May your life remain as colorful as your wedding day.

Sharlane is Officially an Associate Photographer. Talk about Win-Win

Announcing the fabulous Sharlane

The impression that Associate Photographers are “less than” simply isn’t true at Janet Klinger Photography. The ever popular Sharlane has come on board as an Associate Photographer. Together we have formed a win-win relationship. The first part was easy for me: choosing to pursue Sharlane as an Associate. Ever since meeting her, I have been impressed with Sharlane’s positive, creative energy. I fell in love with her work for it’s natural, playful, yet somehow classic style; exactly the same qualities that shine in Sharlane herself. If you are lucky enough to secure Sharlane for wedding photography, you’ll find someone who is passionate about creating something unique just for you. Not only is this inspiring for Sharlane’s clients, but for Sharlane herself. Finding the differences, enhancing the traditions in each wedding, Sharlane remains inspired as an artist, year after wonderful year.

So why would Sharlane, a popular, highly skilled, much published photographer want a Associate relationship? (more…)

Personal Trainer Bootcamp at Greenlake- The Healthy Goddess

50 or more of these lunges lets me know I still have muscles in my buttBefore The Healthy Goddess, Christi Masi created The Healthy Bride. Herself beautiful, fit, and athletic, Christi is clever enough to make a living helping others maintain or create their own positive self-image. And If there is anyone who wants to look good, it’s a bride. Twice each week future brides join Christi at the SAM Olympic Sculpture Park to get in the shape of their lives to celebrate the happiest day of their lives.

BUT WHAT ABOUT AFTER THE WEDDING? Christi found women disinterested in socializing with future brides once no longer belonging to this special club. Hence, The Healthy Goddess. Then even further beyond these newlywed women are women like me who put themselves more in the category of “Recovering Moms”. If there has ever been a group in desperate need of a little kick in the booty camp, its members of THIS club. Move over you trim, fit, gorgeous brides. Here come the rest of us huffing up the hill in hopes of surviving another of Christi’s intense workouts.

Their is nothing like a little camaraderie to inspire me to get out of bed at 5:30 for a rain or shine workout. Even better is having a committed and inspired trainer like Christi Masi creating workouts step by step so my still sleeping brain can relax while the rest of me works toward looking even better than on my wedding day. Or at least better than yesterday. See you at the Greenlake track at 6am SHARP!

Bride Ideas features Florists and Wedding attire in the Best Light

Event lighting has become todays elite wedding accessory. Even the best photographer can only do so much in a dark venue when it comes to candid photography. Your “posed candids” will look fabulous regardless. But for premium lighting of candid moments, subtle or dramatic lighting enhancements are worth the effort. Take a look at the Bride Ideas fabulous fashion show, produced by Terri Morgan of TCM. The great lighting and effects are a PNTA specialty- I used only a simple fill flash.

Granted, the fact that Flora Nova’s flowers were gorgeous, the dresses well chosen, the TCM models from adorable to glamorous all contribute to the sophistication of the images. You too can have the glamor. Hire these great vendors! –Especially ME to be your photographer! ;-)

Green Lake Jewelry Works, A Seattle Gem.

greenlake-jewelers.jpg

Seattle is blessed with many fine jewelers. Still, when I was looking for a jeweler to participate in Urban Fashion Infusion, I immediately thought of Green Lake Jewelry Works. I was thrilled when owner Jim Tuttle joined the growing crew of collaborators.

Over the years, my clients have worked with talented Green Lake designers to fulfill each unique vision. You have no vision to speak of? A jaunt around the custom studio will have you wishing for 10 more ring fingers to satiate your cravings.

My daughter, Ellie, turns 3 in June. Surely this is a big enough event to inspire gift giving (and I don’t mean for Ellie).

Feel free to forward this post to my husband! ;-)

Luly Yang Couture

The selection of dresses, gowns and accessories displayed at Luly Yang’s 4th Ave studio is what dreams are made of. Darcy Camden and I were tickled to enjoy this fashion dreamland while selecting dresses for Fashion In Fusion. Luly runs her business with the utmost care and attention to detail, and given that we were treated like queens, just imagine how YOU will be treated!

Details make the difference, but nothing matters more than having a master designer!

070521lulystudio026.jpg

I am guilty of not knowing Luly’s full scope until now. This is a complete salon with jewelry, shoes, wraps, veils, and party dresses. Remember, these shots were taken without the benefit of good lighting. There’s nothing like seeing them in person. — Well, perhaps in the upcoming fashion spreads…

Seattle Hair & Make-up Artist, Erin Skipley of Bellatrix Studio

I was thrilled to meet make-up artist Erin Skipley of Bellatrix Studio at Monday’s ABC meeting. She’s talented, hip, and a gentle soul. I looked at her book. WOW! I’m trying to come up with a reason to have her do MY hair and make-up. (Can changing a diaper be considered a special occassion?) Erin’s client list is as impressive as her work.

Erin has also agreed to be part of the Urban Fashion in Fusion photo session. I can ‘t wait to work with her!

Seattle Metropolitan Bride and Groom

Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom magazine invited me to a luncheon at the elegant, modern and distinctly urban Hotel 1000. Immediately I wondered why Seattle might want a second Nuptial publication. We already have Seattle Bride. The answer came minutes after stepping off the elevator into a sweet smelling foyer. I was enthusiastically greeted by Poison Waters herself, in her bright, don’t miss me for a moment, blue dress. Now would Seattle Bride have a drag queen host their gala? No doubt things are shaking up here in the NW, so who knows what tomorrow may bring for Seattle Bride. But today there’s Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom. Notice the G word. My husband, formerly my finance, was offended and surprised that so little was addressed to Grooms. He was a huge part of our wedding planning. SMB&G recognizes and encourages the Grooms involvement. Equally as (formerly) disappointing, I have submitted images from my numerous gay and lesbian weddings, never to be published in a bridal mag. SMB&G includes everyone’s nuptials in their scope, which should be taken for granted, for goodness sake!

Seattle Metropolitan Magazine certainly did their homework. Invited were some of my favorite wedding vendors. Luly Yang, John Gardner of Aria Style, Coordinators Merry Beth Turpin of Aisle of View and Travis and Jesse from True Colors Events. Others I at least had the pleasure of saying hello to: the ever helpful Me Ra Koh and Jeff LaPlante, Sharlane Chase, Grace and Hun of GH Kim, Michael Good, Katarina from J Garner, The Lulu weddings gals, The Junebug weddings gals, the catering team at the elegant, waterfront Woodmark Hotel. If all of these quality Seattle wedding vendors sign up with SMB&G, brides and grooms can be sure to find top wedding professionals all in one publication. OK, that’s all for now. Ellie is awake. It takes forever to create links so I have to stop right now!

Golf Club at Newcastle. To Be the Best, They Work With the Best

WAY at the top of my favorite event locations, sitting high upon a hill overlooking Lake Washington, Bellevue, Seattle AND Puget sound, is the impeccably run Golf Club at New Castle. In the planning stages, it’s the professional, highly personable, caring staff that matter. But even more important is the impact the location itself has on an event’s ambiance. This spot is unbeatable for sunsets, spacious and gracious environments, and for a mix of country and urban flair. If you can, fit these folks into your budget, and change your event to a Wednesday if that’s what’s available!

Last night, Newcastle, who always pampers it’s vendors even on wild and crazy event days, spoiled us. Ninety of the Clubs staff and favorite vendors convened to the elegant St Andrew’s Ballroom for a fabulous night of food, friends and fun.

I was thrilled to be the only photographer present. Now, undoubtedly others were invited, but since I don’t know that, I can bask in my own little world for a while. AND I was presented with a round of golf for two. Thank you, Newcastle! If you haven’t played golf here, go get those clubs.

Newcastle hosted more people than I have time to write about, so I’ll narrow this mention to those I had the pleasure of talking with. At the top of the list is the detailed Director of Catering, Theresa “TC” Bailey, with her ever watchful eye. I also laughed with Susan Aeschliman, Kimberly Sissel and Daneka Sarkies who excel when it comes to helpfulness and making sure Newcastle events are just so.

Top event coordinators were there. My hero in this realm is Merry Beth Turpin of Aisle of View. She knows how to make, and if necessary, SAVE the day. I have stories to tell… Sitting next to me was Jackie Ross Grotle of Event Success. She and I have never worked together, and now I’m on a mission to change this. She’s a wonderful, highly intelligent person. Hire both of us and I’ll make you a “deal” through 2008. (This is were you run down the isle, arms waving, screaming your head off because you’re a WINNER!) Great teams make the difference! I also love Kerry Cooper of Bliss Events. Talk about a sweet and organized person. Her adorable designer hubby was there too. Naturally, Wendy Wojcik, of Weddings with Wendy was there, looking gorgeous as ever. Make your event as beautiful. Hire Wendy. Go All The Way! I finally met Margaret Perugini from Andy Mirkovich Productions. She is professional, elegant and warm at the same time. I certainly hope she has her athletic 82 year old groom and 80 year old bride enter my Urban Fusion Fashion contest. (Keep watching. Details within the week!).

In a category of his own is David Galliett of Rented Elegance. This man is TALENTED. When you want ambiance, David’s environments take your breath away. One-stop shop here for props, flowers, linens, and more, or David will happily designs along with a creative team of florist, caterer and coordinator. David = WOW factor. Do the math!

An event for the truly fabulous wouldn’t be complete without John Gardner from Aria Style. John keeps raising the bar in both floral and decor. He has some incredible linens I’ve not seen elsewhere, and that’s just the beginning. Cheers, John! I had the pleasure of sitting next to the sweet and very helpful Allyson Weekly of Plateau Florist. She went out of her way to help me juggle all my camera gear, martini, dinner plate and wallet. And IS she patient. Thanks for you help, Allyson. Helpfulness is one trait you want in a florist!

There were great DJs there too! Greg Lowder of Affairs to Remember had me cracking up, as usual. What a wonderful person. A great listener too. It was great to see Tim Stever of Beautiful Noise. (I photographed his wedding about 15 years ago!) His cutting edge looks mirrors his adaptability. What YOU want to hear is Tim’s specialty. Dan and Bryan Kretz of Emerald City Productions did a great, if difficult job at last nights event. They provided theme music to support a wild and crazy game show that was going on during dinner. The music selected and their timing was right on! Great job D & B! Darrell Christel of Daddy Cool Productions is just that. Daddy Cool! He has a wonderful way about him, so while I have yet to work with Darrell, I can’t wait until I do. This man has PERSONALITY! Tom Denman of A sound Celebration specializes in “Music for all Occasions”. Naturally, he was present at this top-vendor event.

Wedding Party PAAAAAR-TAY!!!

Family is often fabulous, loving and helpful when planning your wedding. Still, when it comes to setting the tone of your Big Day, your wedding party matters! If you want a wild and crazy dance party, avoid inviting only your shy friends to be maids. If you want “class”, having your scantily clad cousin as your maid of honor, while exciting, might alter the desired effect. Is it a family affair? Including all 12 nieces and nephews is an endearing way to be all inclusive, and adds just the right amount of chaos to inspire any photographer.
From THIS photographer’s perspective, the more the merrier in your wedding party. Having said this, I only had my best friend of thirty years stand up with me. But I’m not talking about MY OWN personal preference for intimate, cozy family and closest friend gatherings. I’m talking about what makes for entertaining, energetic moment photographs. Those lovely intimate, cozy shots are for another post…
