Halloween 2008 pictures are ready!
Halloween is a wonderful combination of the simple and the wild. Pretending to be someone or something we are not (at least externally) has it’s own excitement. Stimulated by endless possibilities, I am sometimes inspired and sometimes overwhelmed with costume decisions. What I love about the Annual Janet Klinger Photography Halloween Costume Photos is that, for our neighbors the studio is a hop, skip or slither from home. And for everyone, it’s an affordable treat to capture our own children at their best, beastly or beautiful. I have never seen a child in costume, no matter what his mood, who wasn’t adorable. See for yourself. The halloween photos are in!

Reason #345 why we love our jobs: TM Dessert Works
We keep dreaming of Chocolate. Next door to our Phinney Ridge photo studio is T.M. Dessert Works. This means that most weekdays, delicious smells of chocolate and other goodies tend to drift through the wall (and make us hungry.) Tim and the whole crew are talented bakers, super nice, and great neighbors.
We can special order all kinds of goodies, but a heart-shaped chocolate cake is a favorite around here.
We also testify to their chocolate chip cookies being Seattle’s Best Cookies!!!
Phinney Ridge, Simply a Dream
Phinney Ridge is such a fabulous neighborhood. Here preschool, groceries, parks, zoo, Greenlake, bakeries, and friends are less than a 10 minute walk away. We’re lucky beyond my dreams to live in this politically aware, socially conscious neighborhood where neighbors help each other and the urban village thrives.
Our community revolves around the PNA where members can borrow tools for home projects, and classes cover an enormous array of interest. A tiny portion of the class list includes yoga, pilates, swing, tap, belly dance, computer, musical instruments. Weekly gatherings include Spanish conversation, book clubs, social, political, musical and neighborly events. The recent embracing of the Greenwood Senior Center has added an additional wealth of opportunity for old and young to learn, play and bond together.
Some of my favorites Phinney Ridge / Greenwood establishments include
CLOTHING for Women: The Frock Shop, as if the owner has been sent from heaven to be my personal shopper- unique, trendy yet affordable. Wish packs-in adorable funky items to mix and match, Hip Zephyr for designer clothing in a casual boutique setting, Lemon Meringue for high end wear with an eye toward casual. Small but hip maternity collection too. Tweed represents local designers (funky casual) at still affordable prices.
CHILDREN’S Mimi Rose featuring owner-designed clothing and select toys, books. Rising Stars for adorable new & used clothing, books and gifts. Top Ten Toys is first to come to mind when I want a classic toy or I’m stumped for creative project ideas. playmatters, an indoor playground for kids, networking and seminars for adults. My daughter Ellie gets her hair cut at Beach Combers, where she gets to ride on a turtle while watching a video. Such a treat!
CAFES: The Asian infused Fresh Flours (The azuki bean- green tea cake is second only to their blueberry stuffed muffin) , The happy to be politically correct Green Bean (caters to those with kids. Super comfy atmosphere and tasty treats), Herkimer Coffee (best without children or when you need to work on your laptop) .
RESTAURANTS:
DINNER: Santa Fe Cafe for a flavorful Southwestern treat, Carmelita for vegetarian food (seasonal NW) and hip atmosphere, Il Giardino for tasty Italian, Chef Liao serves Asian fusion in a family run, casual setting.
SMALL PLATES with interesting drinks I choose Oliver’s Twist or Tigertail.
MEDITERRANEAN is popular here: Yannis’, Gorgeous George’s, Olive You, Georgia’s.
SIMPLE BUT TASTY Red Mill Burger, 74th Street Ale House, Crash landing Pizza.
BREAKFAST eateries: Phinney Market for Sunday Brunch, kitschy Mae’s Phinney Ridge Cafe or the sweet family run Pete’s Egg Nest.
OTHER valuable assets. We’re also home to the Phinney EcoVillage, lead by former Seattle Times writer and activist Paul Andrews. Phinney Farmers Market at the PNA. Woodland Park Zoo. Greenlake for swimming indoor, outdoor and all things done comfortably around a 3 mile trail. (Biking and rollerblading at a leisurely pace due to throngs of people enjoying this popular park.)
Come visit Phinney Ridge. Everyone is welcome here.
The Phinney Farmers Market Feeds Me Inside and Out

Finally. It opened tonight!!! Like a child I’ve been awaiting the opening of the new Phinney Farmers Market, hosted in the parking lot of the PNA at 66th and Phinney Ave N. We bought a radio flyer red wagon on Craigslist, allegedly for Ellie’s 3rd birthday, but let’s face it. I’ve always wanted one, and so has Tim. Carrying Market goods and a 3 year old– perfect excuse! I changed my babysitting coverage for Friday so Ellie and I could shop and then meet Tim for a tasty dinner.
The produce was largely organic, all local, and freshly picked. The cheese was easily sampled, expensive but worth it. The breads and baked goods were fresh, organic, wholesome AND tasty. The crepes were to die for. (Oh, to have nine lives…) The thin crust pizza’s were cooked in brick ovens and filled the Market with intense aromas.
The best part was the community camaraderie. I saw so many enjoyable people, both known and new to me. Clients, neighbors, former pre-school parents and kids, future pre-school parents, and friendly people I shared a table with over dinner, coming in waves. I felt like I was enjoying a giant neighborhood party. I can say, knowing it will incorrectly sound like an exaggeration, that I was touched to my inner-being. This is exactly the “center” I’ve been craving for. Best of all, I only rarely work on Fridays, so I plan to make this a weekly event.

Good times at the Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk
This is Jane P. with a note from the production department; I just wanted to post a few of my favorites from the art walk photo sessions; it was a real blast to watch Chris work!

These guys invited us to the High Dive this Thursday for a Seattle Works benefit show.

You can see the whole shoot here.
Introducing Chris B, our New Associate Photographer
Chris B has joined us here at Janet Klinger Photography. Shooting both portraits, events and weddings, Chris is a huge asset to the team. He’s soft spoken, unobtrusive and has an eye for the moment. His portraits are works of art, sophisticated in their simplicity. Decide for yourself. We’re offering an associate special through May 31, 2007. Chris is also photographing art lovers during the annual Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk. Come meet Chris in person, and see what he can do for you!

Looking Good? Let us take your picture during the Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk!

Phinney Neighborhood Association GARAGE SALE DAY
Save the Date! Saturday, April 21, 2007, 9 am – 3 pm
The Phinney Neighborhood Association is hosting their annual enormous garage sale, held throughout Phinney Ridge and Greenwood, and drawing people from all over Seattle.
As mentioned on the PNA website: Bargain shoppers will find treasures galore at this annual neighborhood-wide event that traditionally features more than 150 sales (including several large rummage sales and a Flea Market in the Phinney Center parking lot). The sale annually draws more than 2,000 shoppers to the area.
I’ve personally sold several cameras, an enlarger, and other photo gear at this sale. There is much to choose from. Help keep our neighborhood clean, and take this stuff to YOUR Neighborhood!!!
Easter Eggs Hunt at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo
We live one minute from the zoo, so it was an easy decision to go have fun with thousands of other bambinos yesterday at the amazing Woodland Park Zoo. Aside from the steroid-induced design and budget for the new parking garage, (had to get that jab in!) the zoo makes for a fabulous neighbor. The call of the tiger heard from our front porch and even the smell of dung during our morning runs causes us to smile. Well, fun was had, but smiles weren’t my objective during the Bunny Bounce. As my long-term clients know, I like moody shots in addition to the classic big smile.

OK, I’ll put one smile in this collection.

Our Ellie-Belly. The only child I know in this post.
Ellie and I Cut Classes. Shhhh
Granted, I work a lot. Granted I wish I could be with Ellie even more. But fortunate I am. Other than previously booked wedding and portrait sessions, my schedule is my own. Mind you, like many people, I quickly fill free time with social engagements and classes. On this particular day, I canceled those other engagements so Ellie and I could spend the day together. Some days I find grocery shopping mundane, and pizza making tedious. But not when I’m with Ellie.

Ellie learning it is better to give than to receive. Or, uh,…

Shopping at Kens Market on Phinney Ridge

Rolling in the dough. At least one of us is!

We live only blocks from the amazing Woodland Park Zoo. Ideal for a quick walk in the park before dinner.
Looking for a Pre-school? Choose mine!
I can’t rave enough about Ellie’s pre-school. We attend Woodland Park pre-3s (next year we’ll be in 3-5s) with the talented, creative and boundlessly energetic Teacher Tom Hobson. If you enjoy community and sharing in your child’s pre-school experience, the North Seattle Community College pre-school co-ops might be perfect for you too. There are numerous different locations in North Seattle. But Hurry! These all fill up fast, and there’s a lottery system for those not already enrolled. Check out their website for all the pertinent information. It’s worth the effort.

If you’re not in the North Seattle area, you might be interested in one of these other co-ops.

Hosting Photographers Share– Awesome.
Last night my studio hosted a gathering of NW photographers. Kudos to the group of generous souls so open to sharing and caring. I stopped counting heads at 22 people, but overall the feeling was of cozy, intimate and enthusiastic camaraderie.

Left to right: Jeff LaPlante, Nancy Cassell, Joann Arruda, Susie Hamidi, Sharlane Chase.
OK. First I have to mention two “single and looking” BABE’S at our gathering. (When I said I’d post this, no one protested!)
Sharlane Chase, adorable in personality and looks, not to mention highly talented, is somehow still available. Under different circumstances, sexual orientation being one of them, I’d jump at the chance to date Sharlane. Get with it fellas! A chance to meet Sharlane Chase would be at Urban Unveiled, a party for brides and their entourage. March 8th at the Palace Ballroom.
Also available is the smart and savvy Stephanie Hicks. Talk about a sales dynamo! She’s really cute too! She also happens to be the NW Art Leather rep, among many, many other things.
Here are but a few of the upcoming events, products, and services shared.
Both Kevin Kubota and Gary Fong had numerous fans at this event. I strongly praised Kevin Kubota’s workshops, and the Asuka albums he reps.
Sharlane plugged Gary Fong‘s Lightsphere. Many of us agree that the quality of the on-camera light is greatly enhanced by the various domes designed by Gary.
Jeff LaPlante has a few two-for-one tickets up for grabs to the upcoming WPPI convention. (If you go, tell Claudia Kronenberg that Janet Klinger says “Hi”. She’s my long-time friend from my RIT and Europe days. It’s an understatement to say Claudia is a dynamic person. She will undoubtedly deliver an energetic and heart-felt presentation.)
Mike Nakamura brought some dramatic, touching postcards promoting Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a national organization that unites volunteer photographers with families of dying children. Photographers are always needed for this.
Our Seattle based bereavement photography group, Souluminations has a meeting of volunteer photographers on March 22. For those of us going, care to join me for a drink afterward? Perhaps we could go to the hip & urban, yet adorable Oliver’s Twist, my favorite new nibbly and cocktail spot on Phinney Ridge.
White House Custom Color Lab in Minnesota got a rave from Sharlane Chase and several others. They offer great printed press cards, delivery w/in 3 days, b&w with linen finish. Several agreed with the amazing quality, specifically for the b&w.
Jeff LaPlante’s consulting services have gone public. I personally can vouch for his knowledgeable, personable approach, and immense patience. Jeff’s a good guy to have on your team!
Susie Hamidi praised the very helpful Alex Studio who helps other photogs process their Raw and jpg files, color correcting, retouching and backing up to DVDs and hard drives. Sharlane enthusiastically agrees. The charge: $0.18/image.
Joann Arruda was singing the praises of Pink Penny Design who helped her create a truly stunning Queensberry Album. I was agape at the quality of the images (naturally, since Joann is the photographer!), the design, and of course the album itself. They’ve designed for the savvy, super-shooter/business dude, David Jay too, and have a great sample of his work. Talk about community– Visit David Jay’s OpenSource Photo.
Christopher of Kirkland is part of the Canon 5D Club. New members welcome. Projection is Christoper’s preferred method of proofing. If you really want to know how to sell those Fine Art Wall Portraits with ease, check out the notorious Wall Portrait Conference in Yakima. Christopher has info on purchasing discounted projectors in Portland, helpful if not imperative for selling these large prints.
Stephanie Hicks uses Studio Master Pro for slideshow presentations. Many labs and Art Leather provide the software at no charge to clients.
Thanks to Kara Lathrop for taking great notes, not to mention battling snow and baby-sitting juggling to drive from Bellingham with hubby, Andrew.
My Flu-ridden toddler needs my attention, so I’m afraid I won’t get to the rest of the event. Next time, come on by yourself! If interested in joining future events drop a “comment” with your website and/or blog, and your business name. We’ll see you then…
This Baby Loves Disco Too
Thanks to Ray & Jill Farbarik, who invited us to a neighbors Disco Party for a groovin’ good time. Kids Do Love Disco. But not as much as I do!
Yet another reason I am thrilled to live on Phinney Ridge.

Belly Dance, Disco Dance. What’s the difference?

Dancing shoes on and ready to PARTY!
