Seattle Bride Magazine Best of 2007

pan-pacific-hotel.jpg
Seattle Bride knows how to throw a party. This years Best Of (Wedding Vendors) event at the new Pan Pacific Hotel was a sun-filled, indoor/outdoor martini and sushi feast. Much of the praise goes to Director of Catering, Erik Franklin. He has a warmth and humbleness you expect from your boyscout cousin, while demonstrating a calm, I’m in-charge flair. He showed the modern suites to my sister and me, complete with balcony, warm currents of color and texture, modern bath fixtures, and windows, windows, windows. We natural-light photography specialists love windows.
Back at the party, I LOVED being able to glide back and forth between bright, climate controlled, modern interior, then out to the attached sunset facing deck. A more rowdy deck party atmosphere contrasted the indoor intimate setting. Easily I could see this indoor/outdoor versitility working well during an evening of Michael Benson Band’s fun and furious Big Band sets. (Congratulations to Michael Benson who won “Best Of” again.)
Pan Pacific has a keen sense of style that goes beyond decor. A match made in Asia, Luly Yang designed the stylish hotel uniforms. Luly took the Best Of for Dress Shop too. She got my vote.
As for photographic possibilities: Endless! Loved the lounge, the fireplace, stairway, railing, the warm wood walls, modern fixtures and art everywhere. More than anything, I loved the natural light, and the sense of Welcome Erik Franklin calmly exudes.
Thanks for the great party, Seattle Bride. See you next year!

Video clip shows Janet Klinger at work.

Aaron Horton created this video clip to illustrate how Janet works. We love working with Aaron. Great eye, attitude, and bends over backwards.

Seattle Model Nick Skinner. Our Most Valuble Player

Nick Skinner not only looks great in photographs, his helpful, thoughtful personality earns him Most Valuable Player for the fashion Infusion sessions. Nick not only worked long hours, but carried dry wall, closed dirty freight elevator gates, rearranged furniture, and was on board to help in any way he could “to make the sessions go smoothly”. I didn’t ask for any of this. Nick took these tasks upon himself. Attitude looks great. Attitude works great! Thank you Nick, for exceeding the call of duty!

To see his portfolio, visit #376372 on Model Mayhem

The location for this series of photos is Pravda Studios on Capital Hill. They bent over backwards for us.

Phew! Fashion photography is fast, furious, fun and finished!

After weeks of planning, the Urban Bridal Fashion Infusion sessions have wrapped up. I’m exhilarated and exhausted. Day One I woke up at 4AM, and left my studio at 11:30PM only to rise again at 5AM finishing Day Two at 10:30PM.
Now we have many thousands of images to edit and post process.
I have learned so much from this elaborate production. When time is of the essence, experience is critical. A good stylist makes the difference in attention to attire details and successful accessorizing; not just how outfits fit, but how they hang, flow and shimmer during shooting. Models who need little direction, and who are aware of their best angles, expressions and postures vastly increase the successful image to time ratio. Hair and makeup can make or break an entire set up, no matter how wonderful other talent is.
Most of all, I learned all over again how much I value Jane Patterson, who continually comes up with ways to be helpful, even when I don’t need help. When I DO need help, her Can-Do attitude is calming, and her problem solving abilities glorify her enormous IQ. Let’s see if I can figure out how to keep her around the studio forever. Jane STRONGLY suggests these fashion marathons should only happen once each year. Now that’s wisdom!

Seattle Fashion Photography, Videography by Aaron Horton

video-camera.jpg

Aaron Horton will be capturing Urban Fashion Infusion on video! I am so impressed by Aaron’s unusual perspectives and story telling ability. I am Wowed by his work! He’s been wonderfully flexible and accommodating too. We now have 9 Luly Yang gowns, 6 locations and 8 models to shoot over two 11 hour days. (Sounds like an elaborate wedding!) I’ll share my granola bars, and Spring water (doesn’t get any better than this!) with Aaron while we keep the energy flying high. I can’t wait to collaborate with Aaron.

We’re in count down mode. We begin 7am at the chic, modern W hotel.

Phinney Neighborhood Association GARAGE SALE DAY

Save the Date! Saturday, April 21, 2007, 9 am – 3 pm

The Phinney Neighborhood Association is hosting their annual enormous garage sale, held throughout Phinney Ridge and Greenwood, and drawing people from all over Seattle.
As mentioned on the PNA website: Bargain shoppers will find treasures galore at this annual neighborhood-wide event that traditionally features more than 150 sales (including several large rummage sales and a Flea Market in the Phinney Center parking lot). The sale annually draws more than 2,000 shoppers to the area.

I’ve personally sold several cameras, an enlarger, and other photo gear at this sale. There is much to choose from. Help keep our neighborhood clean, and take this stuff to YOUR Neighborhood!!! ;-)

Surfin Sarfari Success at University Child Development School.

Glad to be a part of the fun at UCDS’s auction which raised nearly $700,000! I’d love to say my photography raised the majority of that, but I actually know the final value. Let’s just say it was less than $600,000. :-)

Congratulations to Dave Miller and Susan Takemoto, the winning bidders for a JKP photo session. I can’t wait to work with you two, officially this time! I’ll be in touch right after this post…
The real winners are the UCDS students. According to Eric S. Sanderson, the auction Chair, the funds help support teacher excellence and financial aid. “Financial aid” is ringing loudly in this Mom’s ears.

Seattle Metropolitan Bride and Groom

Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom magazine invited me to a luncheon at the elegant, modern and distinctly urban Hotel 1000. Immediately I wondered why Seattle might want a second Nuptial publication. We already have Seattle Bride. The answer came minutes after stepping off the elevator into a sweet smelling foyer. I was enthusiastically greeted by Poison Waters herself, in her bright, don’t miss me for a moment, blue dress. Now would Seattle Bride have a drag queen host their gala? No doubt things are shaking up here in the NW, so who knows what tomorrow may bring for Seattle Bride. But today there’s Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom. Notice the G word. My husband, formerly my finance, was offended and surprised that so little was addressed to Grooms. He was a huge part of our wedding planning. SMB&G recognizes and encourages the Grooms involvement. Equally as (formerly) disappointing, I have submitted images from my numerous gay and lesbian weddings, never to be published in a bridal mag. SMB&G includes everyone’s nuptials in their scope, which should be taken for granted, for goodness sake!

Seattle Metropolitan Magazine certainly did their homework. Invited were some of my favorite wedding vendors. Luly Yang, John Gardner of Aria Style, Coordinators Merry Beth Turpin of Aisle of View and Travis and Jesse from True Colors Events. Others I at least had the pleasure of saying hello to: the ever helpful Me Ra Koh and Jeff LaPlante, Sharlane Chase, Grace and Hun of GH Kim, Michael Good, Katarina from J Garner, The Lulu weddings gals, The Junebug weddings gals, the catering team at the elegant, waterfront Woodmark Hotel. If all of these quality Seattle wedding vendors sign up with SMB&G, brides and grooms can be sure to find top wedding professionals all in one publication. OK, that’s all for now. Ellie is awake. It takes forever to create links so I have to stop right now!

UCDS Awesome Auction! Volunteerism at it’s Playful Best

These Moms, Dads and UCDS staff sure know how to roll up their sleeves and have some fun. Clearly much creativity went into planning this playful event. If designed by a parent, Wow! If designed by a professional, Wow! I sure hope she/he has many children left to put through the school. My girl, Ellie, won’t turn 3 until June– after the UCDS cut-off.

OK, I’ve been informed that the creative team was headed by Kenlyn and Tom McQueen. Additionally, Marisha (Mary) Nykiel and Kay Kim  were in charge of the auction displays. This is where the big round of applause comes in!
_mg_4497.jpg
A great central spot for displaying my work. Thanks Debra, for all your wonderful help!

donation card design

If you’re interested in a photo session, and can get your hands on one of the few remaining “donation” cards (now at the front desk at UCDS) then 20% of your session will be donated to UCDS if purchased by April 30th. The sessions don’t need to be completed by then, and are guaranteed to remain the pre-paid price for two years from purchase date. What kind of photography do you dream of?

Are You Beautiful? Are You Visually Unique? Models Wanted! Test Date Tues April 24th, 1-5pm

I am in the throes of building my portfolio of stock photography. “People and their life styles” are my specialty and I would love to have you be a part of the fun. A signed model release is necessary even to participate in the test date, before your 15 minutes of test shooting, which states you understand that images may be used for promotional, advertising, and nearly any purpose. Naturally, I promise not to allow them to be used for pornographic purposes (everyone asks!!!), but these could end up advertising hemorrhoids and the like! Still, the sessions include less pain and a lot more excitement than hemorrhoids do. Payment will be in the form of images on disk from your session, available two months from test date. If you’re called back for two or more shoots, you’ll be paid $30-$50/hour and receive images on disk as well. Let me know if you are interested in this or future test dates. If you have any photos of yourself, feel free to share them.
I love working with ALL ages! If you’re under 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present, and sign the model release.
* Note that while obviously I love photographing glamorous “traditional” models**, I’m especially interested in growing my collection of ethnic diversity (if available, bring both cultural and basic outfits), Hipsters (bring your motor cycles and scooters and of course, sunglasses. Dress the part, and perhaps have a change into professional attire too.), Senior citizens (especially those physically fit, and with companion pets; or children, grandchildren or great grandchildren who look like you!). Still, if you’re simply plain old gorgeous, apply!!! :-)

** I WILL need those of you who are gorgeous to model as brides and grooms in the upcoming Fashion In-Fusion session. All generations needed. Stay tuned until I know which designers are contributing dresses. If you are both glamorous AND fitting into one of the above categories, Whoo Hoo, you’ve made my day!!!

*** We will be having a special test shoot day for people with pets — (your dog, your cat, your cockatoo, your boa constrictor….) on June 13th.

I can’t wait to work with all of you.

Jonathon Ross Rocks. And Sticks and Stones

Last night a spy was in our midst. As if Jonathon’s presentation wasn’t stimulating enough.

Not only is Jonathon Ross of Andersen Ross a hugely talented photographer and business person, his fast past, energetic speaking style and his generosity in crediting his entire team had me admiring him all the more.

Some ideas for people/lifestyle stock shoots:

*Cast calls include FIRST a signed model release. Then photos taken have dual purpose: remembering the model and increasing your stock portfolio with each click.

* Find out each models profession, hobbies, lifestyle so they can provide props. This helps with inspiration, and keeps costs to a minimum. Do they have a suit, a musical instrument, chef hat, surgeons mask, ballet slippers? Do they own a fabulous or funky house/car/bike/etc? “Can we include them?” (Don’t forget those property releases for the bigger items!)

*Have additional props and clothes on hand for cast calls as well as arranged sessions including “classic” clothing in a variety of sizes.

*Models might include friends, family, and anyone you meet.

* Models come in all shapes, colors, sizes, and levels of attractiveness. No surprise though; Attractive still sells best!

* Advertise your need for models in places frequented by the people you want. Health clubs are great for finding fit models. Post an ad on the club board.

*Have Errors and Omissions Insurance

*Producers are hugely important. They can help with the following:

A) Collecting signed model releases from models, locations, and property including homes, boats, art.

B) Arranges access to locations and gets signed releases, pays fees.

C) Buys or collects props for shoots, covers identifiable branding, keeps photographer abreast of shot list and model’s schedule.

*Don’t stop shooting what you love, but figure out what brings in the most dollars. Then you can make an informed choice about the cost of producing different types of sessions, and what you’re priorities are. You can shoot what you want when you retire (early!).

So here’s Jonathon, Mr Diversity himself. He’s represented at the big agencies , having toes in rights managed, royalty free, and his own stock agency, Blend Images. Reluctantly, he is currently researching the implications of the micro-stock agencies. (Andersen-Ross has no plans to enter the micro stock market.) Having shared this with a sigh and slightly shaking head, we were all shaken when up pops a momentarily sheepish (but ultimately articulate) Chad Bridwell. “I’m with one of “those” micro stock agencies”, Chad states a bit nervously, as if anticipating the pounce of a group of 30. Still physically intact and building confidence, he explains the positive side of receiving $1 per image. $1 thirty times in a month is still $30. The “big boys” with fotolia are making “big bucks”. Really? I felt like I was having Déjà vu. Eight to ten years ago at an ASMP presentation we were comparing royalty free vs. traditional rights managed stock agencies. Jonathon was then in Chad’s shoes, feeling perhaps like the outcast “bad guy” who was challenging tradition. Jonathon represented the guy making “big bucks” which was believed to be a far cry from what the traditional stock shooters were making. You don’t hear Jonathon complaining, but he’s watching this downward trend closely, and isn’t joining the micro stock set anytime soon.

What seems clear is that Micro Stock is here to stay, at least in some form. While there may be dramatic erosion of principal now, having one more way to create income can’t be all bad, at least for hobbiests. And diversity of income source is Good. On a personal note, I see opportunity here, yet I see long term returns moving downward perhaps leaving only the agency owners able to make a living. (Without having a second job, that is.) I am certainly tempted by the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” chorus. Photography in all it’s forms is still a fun and exciting job to have. Hey, I used to house clean. TALK about a tough job! But for now, I’d rather be a professional photographer and clean on the side, than the other way around. ;-) I’m sticking with rights managed and a royalty free until I know more about this threatening trend. Thanks Jonathon, for both your talk, and your follow-up e-mails to clarify your current perspective.

_mg_4358.jpg
Jonathon sharing 110 selects from an all day shoot. All were great, attesting to his huge success.

_mg_4370.jpg
Dum dum dum duuuuuummmm. Talk about a serious moment. When Chad said he was with “one of THOSE micro stock agencies” of which Jonathon spoke, a tense hush filled the studio… But sadly, with camera at the ready, no fist fighting broke out. ;-) They probably wouldn’t have signed a release anyway.

_mg_4371.jpg
But Chad’s honest, thoughtful presentation of fotolia had us all breathing a sigh of relief. Jonathon and Chad proceeded to have an intelligent, if initially tense conversation from which we all benefited. These bonus moments keep life interesting, and our minds expanding. Kudos to both J and C for keeping guards down and minds open.

_mg_4380.jpg
Counting the many pre-planned ideas Jonathon uses for one shoot. Before he begins the session he has a list often including the angle and lens choice. Improved efficiency keeps costs down and variety up. (No model release needed for this shot!)

_mg_4349.jpg
Hey Jonathon, do I need a model release for the profile shot? I guess really I should be asking Chris Bowden and Amanda Ringstad, the Profilers themselves.

_mg_4351.jpg
The pretty gal in the green is Mardee Austin. I feel even luckier than usual. She’s agreed to become a part of the Janet Klinger Photo Team. With a degree in marketing, and a warm, caring way with people, Mardee joins us April 9th as our client liaison and marketing maven. I’m SO excited and honored to have Mardee on board!

Golf Club at Newcastle. To Be the Best, They Work With the Best

WAY at the top of my favorite event locations, sitting high upon a hill overlooking Lake Washington, Bellevue, Seattle AND Puget sound, is the impeccably run Golf Club at New Castle. In the planning stages, it’s the professional, highly personable, caring staff that matter. But even more important is the impact the location itself has on an event’s ambiance. This spot is unbeatable for sunsets, spacious and gracious environments, and for a mix of country and urban flair. If you can, fit these folks into your budget, and change your event to a Wednesday if that’s what’s available!

Last night, Newcastle, who always pampers it’s vendors even on wild and crazy event days, spoiled us. Ninety of the Clubs staff and favorite vendors convened to the elegant St Andrew’s Ballroom for a fabulous night of food, friends and fun.

I was thrilled to be the only photographer present. Now, undoubtedly others were invited, but since I don’t know that, I can bask in my own little world for a while. AND I was presented with a round of golf for two. Thank you, Newcastle! If you haven’t played golf here, go get those clubs.

Newcastle hosted more people than I have time to write about, so I’ll narrow this mention to those I had the pleasure of talking with. At the top of the list is the detailed Director of Catering, Theresa “TC” Bailey, with her ever watchful eye. I also laughed with Susan Aeschliman, Kimberly Sissel and Daneka Sarkies who excel when it comes to helpfulness and making sure Newcastle events are just so.

Top event coordinators were there. My hero in this realm is Merry Beth Turpin of Aisle of View. She knows how to make, and if necessary, SAVE the day. I have stories to tell… Sitting next to me was Jackie Ross Grotle of Event Success. She and I have never worked together, and now I’m on a mission to change this. She’s a wonderful, highly intelligent person. Hire both of us and I’ll make you a “deal” through 2008. (This is were you run down the isle, arms waving, screaming your head off because you’re a WINNER!) Great teams make the difference! I also love Kerry Cooper of Bliss Events. Talk about a sweet and organized person. Her adorable designer hubby was there too. Naturally, Wendy Wojcik, of Weddings with Wendy was there, looking gorgeous as ever. Make your event as beautiful. Hire Wendy. Go All The Way! I finally met Margaret Perugini from Andy Mirkovich Productions. She is professional, elegant and warm at the same time. I certainly hope she has her athletic 82 year old groom and 80 year old bride enter my Urban Fusion Fashion contest. (Keep watching. Details within the week!).

In a category of his own is David Galliett of Rented Elegance. This man is TALENTED. When you want ambiance, David’s environments take your breath away. One-stop shop here for props, flowers, linens, and more, or David will happily designs along with a creative team of florist, caterer and coordinator. David = WOW factor. Do the math!

An event for the truly fabulous wouldn’t be complete without John Gardner from Aria Style. John keeps raising the bar in both floral and decor. He has some incredible linens I’ve not seen elsewhere, and that’s just the beginning. Cheers, John! I had the pleasure of sitting next to the sweet and very helpful Allyson Weekly of Plateau Florist. She went out of her way to help me juggle all my camera gear, martini, dinner plate and wallet. And IS she patient. Thanks for you help, Allyson. Helpfulness is one trait you want in a florist!

There were great DJs there too! Greg Lowder of Affairs to Remember had me cracking up, as usual. What a wonderful person. A great listener too. It was great to see Tim Stever of Beautiful Noise. (I photographed his wedding about 15 years ago!) His cutting edge looks mirrors his adaptability. What YOU want to hear is Tim’s specialty. Dan and Bryan Kretz of Emerald City Productions did a great, if difficult job at last nights event. They provided theme music to support a wild and crazy game show that was going on during dinner. The music selected and their timing was right on! Great job D & B! Darrell Christel of Daddy Cool Productions is just that. Daddy Cool! He has a wonderful way about him, so while I have yet to work with Darrell, I can’t wait until I do. This man has PERSONALITY! Tom Denman of A sound Celebration specializes in “Music for all Occasions”. Naturally, he was present at this top-vendor event.
