Rekindling the Adventurous Spirit

Where oh where did those days of traveling to Ecuador or cross country skiing in Yellowstone Park go? In these hectic days of parenthood, I both relish being energetic Ellie’s Mom, and resent the daily responsibilities I’m now faced with– and disappointed in myself for falling down on the job. Right now our fridge interior is barren except for the 5 day old Brazilian black bean soup, last weekends now-cardboard pancakes, and last night’s quinoa pasta leftovers.

Truth be told, the grueling challenge of a “responsible” life goes further back than Ellie. After a scary misdiagnosis with Lupus, I cut back working all waking hours of the day that I wasn’t playing. Until that doctor’s appointment, I felt balanced. Yet the 2 week wait for test results had me reevaluating balance. As my 30’s set in, so did my desire to find that special life-long snuggle guy. Running full boar all waking hours left little time for romance. Scared by the unknown, I felt I would have to give up my full-of-play ways. Sure enough, when I fell in love, I was drawn to the responsible, tenderly adorable, creative, orderly architect, Tim Rohleder. While I thought we had a perfect match, however close, nothing is perfect. Here is a man who puts family first, just as I always dreamed. Tim works hard, loves his clients, bikes to work, takes an equal responsibility for household chores. What more could I want? The answer points to me, not Tim. Janet’s Agenda: supermom, superwife, superphotographer, superathlete, superfriend, supersmart, but subtract “super” and you have a clear idea of how I feel. Not bad, not great. Where is life’s adventure and spontaneity I fell in love with so long ago?

Happily we are able to take 2 annual trips to visit each Tim’s family and my family. Then there’s work related travel. It’s no secret that I relish these work excursions hinting of my old travel ways. Grateful for these work/travel opportunities, today my challenge is to revive self-inspired excursions rather than passively accept them only when clients request. And to somehow get Tim and Ellie to join in the fun.

Modeling an adventuresome yet balanced life to Ellie would be a gift to her, to myself, and to our family team. Onward I struggle for this precarious balance, unwilling to accept my vision only as a dream.

With tickets now booked to Anchorage (June1-7), I’m off to the grocery store… Balance is achieved one day at a time.

Phinney Ridge, Simply a Dream

Phinney Ridge is such a fabulous neighborhood. Here preschool, groceries, parks, zoo, Greenlake, bakeries, and friends are less than a 10 minute walk away. We’re lucky beyond my dreams to live in this politically aware, socially conscious neighborhood where neighbors help each other and the urban village thrives.

Our community revolves around the PNA where members can borrow tools for home projects, and classes cover an enormous array of interest. A tiny portion of the class list includes yoga, pilates, swing, tap, belly dance, computer, musical instruments. Weekly gatherings include Spanish conversation, book clubs, social, political, musical and neighborly events. The recent embracing of the Greenwood Senior Center has added an additional wealth of opportunity for old and young to learn, play and bond together.

Some of my favorites Phinney Ridge / Greenwood establishments include

CLOTHING for Women: The Frock Shop, as if the owner has been sent from heaven to be my personal shopper- unique, trendy yet affordable. Wish packs-in adorable funky items to mix and match, Hip Zephyr for designer clothing in a casual boutique setting, Lemon Meringue for high end wear with an eye toward casual. Small but hip maternity collection too. Tweed represents local designers (funky casual) at still affordable prices.

CHILDREN’S Mimi Rose featuring owner-designed clothing and select toys, books. Rising Stars for adorable new & used clothing, books and gifts. Top Ten Toys is first to come to mind when I want a classic toy or I’m stumped for creative project ideas. playmatters, an indoor playground for kids, networking and seminars for adults. My daughter Ellie gets her hair cut at Beach Combers, where she gets to ride on a turtle while watching a video. Such a treat!

CAFES: The Asian infused Fresh Flours (The azuki bean- green tea cake is second only to their blueberry stuffed muffin) , The happy to be politically correct Green Bean (caters to those with kids. Super comfy atmosphere and tasty treats), Herkimer Coffee (best without children or when you need to work on your laptop) .

RESTAURANTS:

DINNER: Santa Fe Cafe for a flavorful Southwestern treat, Carmelita for vegetarian food (seasonal NW) and hip atmosphere, Il Giardino for tasty Italian, Chef Liao serves Asian fusion in a family run, casual setting.
SMALL PLATES with interesting drinks I choose Oliver’s Twist or Tigertail.
MEDITERRANEAN is popular here: Yannis’, Gorgeous George’s, Olive You, Georgia’s.
SIMPLE BUT TASTY Red Mill Burger, 74th Street Ale House, Crash landing Pizza.
BREAKFAST eateries: Phinney Market for Sunday Brunch, kitschy Mae’s Phinney Ridge Cafe or the sweet family run Pete’s Egg Nest.

OTHER valuable assets. We’re also home to the Phinney EcoVillage, lead by former Seattle Times writer and activist Paul Andrews. Phinney Farmers Market at the PNA. Woodland Park Zoo. Greenlake for swimming indoor, outdoor and all things done comfortably around a 3 mile trail. (Biking and rollerblading at a leisurely pace due to throngs of people enjoying this popular park.)

Come visit Phinney Ridge. Everyone is welcome here.

Yervant and Joe Buissink sure, but where did Dennis Reggie come from?

These two wild and crazy guys ( yes the Belushi Brothers should come to mind) put on an entertaining and informative show. Joe Buissink and Yervant personify two diverging paths, each an inspired dance down the road to the 5 star hotel called Success.

Yervant likes to be in control both during shooting, and then again during the PhotoShop “finishing” of his vision. Creating images is so important to Yervant, he does not cover the reception where it makes sense for events to unfold naturally.

Joe prefers his hired “main” shooter to be in control of posed groups while Joe shoots from a quiet, playful place behind the scenes. He only gives a set of proofs at the end of the day. I love the idea that he rewards his brides for collecting orders from family and friends by adding extra images to the album for each $1000 collected. Talk about a great win-win. I also love the Day-of-wedding Parent Gift. Before the wedding the bride & groom purchase a wall portrait, usually for a parent or two, to be delivered during the wedding reception. After shooting “formals” an image is sent to his studio to be printed, matted and framed, then is delivered to an ecstatic parent while still enjoying the wedding reception.

Joe “assisting” Yervant by holding a video spot light.

I call this a “show” because they each performed leaving little time for the initially encouraged “Ask us. We’re here for you.” Still much was covered, and well worth the investment of $200.

Added bonus was the company of a couple of my favorite photographers : Susie Hamidi and Sharlane Chase. After a full day we went to Tom Douglas’ inspired Palace Kitchen for dinner. Who do I spot in the window but this Dennis Reggie-alike. Embarrassed but willing, Susie and Sharlane accompanied me to get our picture taken with him. This photo was taken by his dinner companion. Thanks to you both. You made our day.

Classic Album vs. Coffee Table Book vs. Coffee Table Album

There are so many options when it comes to albums, it can be a bit overwhelming…

To keep this post reasonably short, I’ll compare only the albums included in our Wedding Options. In all options including albums, you may choose any of these styles.

Thanks to Your Feedback, New Photography Products and Services

My first real job was as a sales clerk at Marshall Fields in Chicago. I was 16 years old. There I first heard “The customer is always right.” Even more valuable, I observed that some customers were “more important” to business than others. While initially I thought this stature was based on the depth of a pocket book, more imperative was a sense of partnership and loyalty. By choosing to state product preferences, request numerous special orders, and constructively criticize the management rather than go elsewhere, business and client became more bonded to each other.

If that was true for an enormous business, it’s even more so for a humble one. I rely on customer feedback, positive AND negative. Here are a few of the changes I’ve made because of your feedback.

NEW PHOTOGRAPHY PRODUCTS AND SERVICES OFFERED, THANKS TO YOUR HELPFUL FEEDBACK.

Offer a large selection of albums * Discount clone albums * Sell Originals (formerly negatives) * Offer less expensive sessions with talented Associate Photographers * Make ordering easier for friends and family by posting an online gallery * Keeping galleries private on request * Re-releasing the images on request * If custom prints are not necessary, a print discount applies during the first month of on-line proofing * Same day slideshows displayed at the event * Images posted to your iPod * Use of images on your website * Fine Art Holiday, Thank You, Baby Announcement, and Save the Date cards

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happiness is a Job That Gets Better Each Day.

Want to love your job? Photograph a teenager. Just when you thought you were charmed, humored, humbled more than possible, the next teenager comes along to raise the bar.

Sure, I love babies. Heart-melting, sweet, chubby adorable faces that change expressions each second. Toddlers and preschoolers have dress-up and Big messes, my jokes are hysterical even when the studio team rolls their eyes. Grade schoolers charmingly tell me how to operate the camera, serve the beverages, encourage their pet to smile, accurately. Middle schoolers are most brilliant of all ages. I get to simply take their lead on these energetic sessions. No matter how much we plan, we detour down the path taken at this fleeting moment.

Teenagers are often excited to help plan & design their own photo session. Remarkably different from the year before, I capture the theme unfolding, sometimes leading the action, more often following. From this teen-time on, I know my most important collaborator is no longer the parent designer of yesteryear, but the unfolding teenager now before the camera. With the design work done, let’s play!

Test: How old is Jane? She celebrates her Bat Mitzvah this weekend.

Answer: 20 of course!

Or 26?

Congratulations on your Bat Mitzvah, Jane. Looking forward to photographing you and your family at Temple Beth Am tomorrow. And thank you for the great downtown Ballard session! Ballard looks good on you.

Today I Photographed a Favorite Subject - An Enthusiastic Teen!

Tweens and Teens are fascinating. We are not locked in to illustrating “who I am”, but rather we experiment with “who I might be”. There is no one more creative, willing, fun to photograph! Alena is the best of the best. This day the temperature screamed “Wool Coat”, not silk dress. Her dainty cocktail dress sophistication comes later at the Bat Mitzvah celebration. Now we climbed on grills, racks and embankments. The wind tousled her adorable curls into her eyes and mouth. Trooper that Alena is, we were able to finish the session with smiles still on our faces, even though her goose bumps where as high as neighboring Queen Anne Hill.

Blog Blues? Generosity Helps the Weary

Blogging eats time. Writing, image selection and photo prep are basics. I ache to have something pretty (well gorgeous actually), functional yet personable and still get to work with my awesome clients from time to time. Help is on the way. At least with the “pretty” part.
Jennifer Apple at Photoshop support shares concepts on design, functionality and links for templates & add-ons. Finally we have a favicon thanks to her clear simple explanation (and my Can-do staff person, Jane Patterson!).

Through Jennifer I discovered a link to the site of helpful God of the Blogging Universe, Paul Stamatiou. After hours of reading (Burp- scuze me!) you realize that this man is smart and enormously generous with his knowledge. Paul, if I ever meet you in person, forgive the bear hug.

Paul helps encourage “lurkers” to come forward to mutual benefit. (I’ll reveal Myself when I get some more TIME!) As suggested, we’re now registered with Technorati and are building our own Ping Configuration page.

I’ll stop here. Needless to say, the time-saving is all relative. Getting referred to these sites saved time in research. My time was spent reading high quality, relevant information presented simply. Gads. Look what time it is…

Hurry Up and Relax. No friends necessary at Olympus Spa

In the ever-present struggle to regain balance between personal and professional life, life as momma to Ellie and wife to Tim, Thursday night has been carved out as “MY” night. Granted one Thursday each month I’m at an informative PUG meeting, or an educational Woodland Park 3-5s co-op meeting, or occasionally an inspiring Soulumination meeting. Still, 1 to 3 nights each month are for doing as I please. This tiny freedom rejuvenates.

I usually spend that time with friends, so much do I miss being social. Now it’s easiest to build friendships with other working moms who are also motivated to go around Greenlake at 8:30 in the pitch blackness.

But last Thursday, oh my! I had forgotten the sheer pleasure of nestling into the warm sands of Olympus Spa. Blissful, rare relaxation overcomes me as I bake in the mud & jade room, then cool down to warm in the charcoal room. I don’t know the exact purpose of these “earth energy” rooms. Who cares about energy anyway. Give me it’s antithesis!

Then into the mugwort steamroom. Yuck. Slimy on the butt! Might that be why they gave me an extra tiny towel? With towel in place, mind off the slime, my pores couldn’t be happier, my breathing easier. To cool off, into the freezing waterfall pool. Gasp! Then into the hottest of the pools to soak before I have a 50 minute Korean body scrub.

jaderoom.jpg large_6330951295437405930794.jpg waterfall.jpg

1) Mud & Jade room 2) Relaxation lounge with foot message 3) Waterfall pool surrounded by 3 other warm to hot pools.

Why work if you can’t splurge now and then? Use of the spa for a day is $35 in Lynnwood, $30 in Tacoma. The bodyscrub is $65/60 Lynnwood/Tacoma. I’m so happy Tim and I figured out a way to have some time for each of us. I’m ready for another week.

Hunka Hunka Burning Love

Tim is SO sweet. One of his many great traits is his adoration of Ellie, and his complete commitment to our little family. Nothing’s more romantic than being held in the thoughts of the man you love. Ellie adores her daddy, and so do I!

(Tim’s really private and never reads my blog. Shhh. If you don’t mention this he’ll never know.) Oh. Did I mention complete honesty is the key to a successful relationship?

SAM Sculpture Park lifts the AT&T awards to High Art

Tonight the gorgeous Sculpture Park benefited immensely from the creative direction of Melissa Bryan of Lush Parties & Events. While the Park may stand alone, Melissa is true to her tagline: life more fabulous. Here are photos of the AT&T awards event she designed. Melissa made my job easy. Thanks Melissa!

Kelsey was associate shooter adding creativity all her own. Thanks Kelsey!
